First of all, happy dia-versary. Whether one's up for celebrating or not, it's worth recognizing each and every day.

I hear you on the burnout, Scott. I've been dealing with some of that and some pretty hardcore depression for the past several months, likely fueled in part by D and thyroid and just some other ongoing life storms. It's really made me question a lot and want to just withdraw, but I've hung on... and am glad for that. The support and just being involved helps keep me accountable to myself, in a sense. But I am still feeling it all. Balance is key. Polonsky really really hit home for me, and I'm still wrapping my mind around all that.

Anyhow, I've historically enjoyed your blog for all aspects - the media issues specifically but also the personal D-Life issues. I just like hearing stories all around.

But as we all know, our own lives and sanity must come first. Don't write if you don't want to. That's what I have realized, though am writing a lot these days.

However much or little, it's good to others are there regardless. So here we are! Best your way, Scott.

Oh, and really: I have to say how AWESOME it was that you described the vinyl-records to the iTunes generation... Simply outstanding there!

Scott, I empathize with where you're coming from. There are so many bloggers out there today, many of them quite good and covering much the same ground, that I sometimes wonder why I bother.

Hence I try to cover the science behind diabetes instead of the basics in my Wildly Fluctuating blog. Otherwise, if there's a story I know everyone else will jump all over, I don't bother to write about it. I figure my audience will get the information regardless of what I write.

But I always find your blogposts to be different, to cover ground that other people do not. When a person has just been Dx'd, I think they have a thirst to understand how other people deal with it, to read about successes and failures other D-people have had. I certainly did.

But with time, we don't need that as much. For me, not eating carbs, testing BG, and injecting a bolus insulin once a day is now normal. I don't need to read about it all day. And I don't want to think about it all day.

So don't feel guilty about taking blogging vacations. When you do post, you have something interesting to say.

I confess, I was surprised to read that you Twitter, as brevity is not your trademark (grin).

Hang in there. When I'm feeling sorry for myself, I sometimes think, what if no one else had to go to the bathroom every day, what if their wastes just miraculously evaporated. We would undoubtedly think that we carried a horrid burden, having to eliminate all this disgusting stuff.

But because everyone else does that, we hardly give it a thought. I think DM should be like that. Keeping in touch with others who live like we do makes DM controlling more normal, though still difficult, and I know type 1 is more demanding than type 2, and type 1 usually begins at a younger age. I had 56 years without worrying about BG. I'm grateful for that.

So again, hang in there. Take a blogging vacation. We all know that when you decide to write again, what you write will be worth reading.

Scott, I loved this post! First of all, congratulations on having done so well with 35 years of diabetes. Second, I had totally forgotten about Fruit Stripes Gum. I used to love that stuff. And Gatorade gum, too. Does that still exist? I also recall (with some sadness) that Herbal Essences shampoo bottle.

Agreed a cure for diabetes requires addressing the autoimmune issues as well as the insulin-production issues.

Seventies, huh? My sophomore year, our high school had a "Social Dancing" option for PE where we learned some of the basic ballroom dances and about a dozen different varieties of the Hustle. Don't forget the 50's nostalgia (Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, etc. -- BTW, the Fonz is now the con-artist father in USA's Royal Pains). Halter tops weren't as big where I was as tube tops, and Levis with the waist size markered out (if it was larger than 24"), "jelly" belts and sandals, and Huk-a-Poo shirts. Girls' Huk-a-Poos had to be one size too tight, so there were gaps between the buttons. Puka necklaces purchased in Miami. Jewfros. Wedgies (both haircuts and shoes). Aviator glasses. Frye boots. Boot-cut jeans meant skinny legs that fit inside the boot, not flare/bell-bottoms that are worn outside the boot. Rolling up long jeans instead of hemming them. Rolling up jeans to expose the top of the Frye boot. Crocheted vests (oops, that was more late 1960's). Leisure suits. Women's pantsuits whose tunics doubled as dresses - or were longer than dresses. "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!" and "Mamma mia, that's a spicy meatball!" ads for Alka-Seltzer...

Hey Scott, congratulations on enduring 35 years of this lousy disease. I meant what I said at the summit, I've not blogged much recently because of the emotional effort of writing about yet another piece of technology that really doesn't move us any closer to a substantial improvement of how we manage daily, weekly and annually living with the D.

Thanks for the pointers to the quilt, and the reminder of various songs I listened to non-stop in the 70s.

I can tell you I always appreciate your thoughtful and insightful posts. Hope we get together before another year is up.

Scott, you are an inspiration to many. Congrats on your diaversary this week! It's not easy fighting this battle day after day, but not only have you fought hard...you take extra time to share research and your experiences with others. No doubt there are many many like us who greatly appreciate it. Also, thanks for the heads up about Fruit Stripe gum...always a favorite and glad to hear they are still making it. It's the little things in life sometimes that give us the greatest pleasure.
